How to connect Superset to your AI tool with MCP

Connect an external AI tool to Superset over MCP, and understand what each permission lets it do

Written by Agatha Beise

The MCP connector lets an outside AI tool work with your Superset data and answer questions in plain language. You ask in your own words, and the tool picks the right lookups against live data.

You'll find it in Account > MCP, split into two tabs: Setup and Connected apps.

Follow these steps

  1. Open Account and go to MCP, on the Setup tab.

  2. Under Add the MCP server, copy the Server URL.

  3. Paste that URL into your AI tool as a new MCP server, then choose I’ve added the server.

  4. Sign in to connect the tool. In Claude Code, run /mcp to start the sign-in. Most other tools start it for you the first time you ask a question.

  5. Review the permissions the tool asks for, and grant only the ones you want. See below.

  6. Choose I’ve signed in, then ask your first question in your own words.

What you are granting

Signing in is where you decide what the tool can do. The permissions are deliberately separate, so agreeing to one is not agreeing to the others.

  • Reading your roster — your tool reads a client’s program, workouts and training history. This is the permission most tools need.

  • Writing to a client’s training log — the tool can log workouts on a client’s behalf. This is a separate permission, and it changes what your clients see in their app. Grant it only if you actually want the tool logging for you.

  • Health data — sleep, HRV and resting heart rate from a connected wearable are separate from workouts, and are only shared if the client has shared them.

The tools act as you. They see exactly the clients you see, and nothing more.

Connected apps

The Connected apps tab lists every AI app you have signed in from, on any device, and lets you revoke any of them. Check it if you are not sure what still has access.

Notes & best practices

  • Sign in on each device you want to use. A connection made on your laptop doesn’t carry to your phone.

  • Start with reading only. Add the write permission later, once you know how the tool behaves and you want it logging for you.

  • If the page says it couldn’t check your MCP access, choose Try again. It’s usually a temporary connection problem.

  • Access is being turned on a few accounts at a time. If you see You are on the list, your answers are recorded and the team will email you when your account is ready.

FAQ

Can the AI tool write into my clients’ accounts?

Only if you grant that permission when you sign in. Reading your roster and writing to a client’s training log are separate, and you can grant one without the other.

Can the tool see other coaches’ clients?

No. The connection acts as you, so it sees exactly the clients your own account sees.

Does it get my clients’ sleep and heart-rate data?

Health data is a separate permission from workouts, and only covers what a client has chosen to share.

How do I disconnect a tool?

Open Account > MCP and go to the Connected apps tab, then revoke it there.

Do I have to sign in again on another device?

Yes. Each device you want to use needs its own sign-in.

I don’t see the MCP page. Why?

MCP is enabled per account and is still rolling out. Contact [email protected] to ask about access.
